Isabelle Ribeiro
Orlando, FL

Biography:
I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and since 2001 have been living in Florida, where I obtained my B.A. in Art from the University of Central Florida. Art has become my tool of control. From the moment I first heard a shutter click, I realized I had the ability to capture something that could be completely planned, lit, and composed by me. The relationship between humans and objects has always been deeply rooted in my conceptual photographs. The work with dolls allows me to embrace a new level of self-understanding, and it progressed into analyzing the relationship between humans, as objects. The mechanics and patterns of human relationships and actions are represented through the personas of these robot-like dolls, evoking a somehow human quality and emotional atmosphere. The Latin word 'machina' (măk'ə-nə) for machine was used by artist Batchix when sculpting the dolls present in these photographs. It seemed fitting as a working title for the series. I am embracing the irony present in this work. The dolls were carefully sculpted and crafted by a human, as opposed to a machine, however they are made to look like robots. As each image is created, my goal is to explore what defines us as humans, and what distances us from being machines with automatic actions and programmed thoughts.
