Malcolm Craig Gilbert
Belfast, Northern Ireland
Biography:
Malcolm Craig Gilbert is an artist based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and is aged 45. He was a police officer for 18 years during the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland before being medically retired due to the affects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. As a means of rehabilitation, he took up photography and taught himself a way of expressing his suppressed feelings and emotions through his art. His dark vignettes place himself in a theatrical landscape of bold, saturated color, with cinematic tableaus cleaved from a pastiche of memories - from both the real and perceived world around him. His allegorical investigation into these perpetual cycles of violence that inflict many societies around the world won him recognition at the 2008 International Photography Awards where he was a nominee for his ' Post Traumatic Exorcism' series in the Deeper Perspective category, along with 2 artworks selected for Best of Show. His work has won many note worthy mentions in various competitions world wide, while he continues to show in Belfast.
